Children’s nursing

My background is in children’s oncology, so I’ve cared for children with cancer for many years, and their families. This led me into my other interest which is palliative care, so those children who cannot be cured – they enter the palliative phase of illness and unfortunately some pass away which is a stark reality, and I’ve been heavily involved in this phase. I researched it in my doctoral studies, in particular how we as healthcare professionals can support parents living through the loss of a child. A lot of my research, publications, clinical teaching and experiences are in this area.

I’ve worked at other universities in the past and since coming to Kingston and St George’s I’ve been very impressed with the programme, the experience created for students and how the students receive a tailored programme to their individual needs. They receive a lot of support, and the services just seem excellent here. The personal tutor system is very good and there’s a close link between our universities and our practice partners. We work closely together to provide a very rounded and robust educational experience.
