Foundations of Emergency Practice

Foundations of Emergency Practice is a work-based course designed to enable nurses who are new to emergency and acute care to gain the required knowledge and skills to practice. The course is run by the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences with, and for, the following partner NHS Trusts:

  • St George's Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Kingston Hospital NHS Trust
  • Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust
  • Mayday Healthcare NHS Trust.

Course benefits

The course helps students understand what they need to know in their first year in practice. It has been found to augment personal and professional development including knowledge, skills, confidence and job satisfaction. The strongest impact has been on newly-qualified nurses who describe the course as providing a bridge between being a student and a staff nurse.

Course structure

The course includes the following elements:

  • Five ‘themed’ one-day study days delivered over a six month period. These are: Professional Issues in Emergency Practice, Care of the Acutely Ill Patient, Mental Health/Discharge Planning, Minor Injuries/Paediatrics and Contemporary Issues in Emergency Practice.
  • Our Work-Based LearningOpens new window (PDF 130K) short course/module (which carries 15 academic credits at either Level 5 or 6 that can be used towards a diploma, degree or masters).
  • A portfolio document to guide your work-based learning, consisting of knowledge and skills framework (KSF)-linked competencies and reflective writing, to be completed over 6-12 months.
  • Mentorship to facilitate completion of the portfolio.
