Our knowledgeable academics will equip you with the skills and knowledge to develop your expertise in a subject specialism. Courses

Kingston University is also an accredited School Direct Initial Teacher Training provider. School Direct is a government-led initiative that seeks to place schools at the centre of Initial Teacher Training (ITT). Working with a university partner such as Kingston, schools will take a leading role in recruiting trainee teachers and in designing and delivering the training programme. The School Direct scheme offers fees-paid training or salaried work-based training.  You will be awarded a PGCE by Kingston upon successful completion of the programme.

Learning tools and facilities
  • You will develop hands-on skills in our Practice Learning Suite
  • The Kingston Hill campus has a large wooded area that includes a nature trail and pond area for use with local children. These exciting resources help to inspire children and students and promote a love of learning in the outdoor classroom
  • Our PGCE students start their course with a weekend in Dorset engaged in outdoor learning which they consistently rate as one of the highlights of their course
  • Specific resources for teaching in the Learning Resource Centre
  • Our Wiki site encourages partner schools and students to share teaching and learning ideas
Student benefits and support
  • Students are offered support with assignment writing and have additional maths classes to develop their subject knowledge. We offer a tutorial support system to guide students through the course
  • During each placement you will be supported by staff from within the University and the school
  • We have a dedicated Student Support Officer to ensure student wellbeing; they are the first point of contact for students who have personal problems, need advice or are seeking information about University services.
Extra practice learning opportunities
PGCE students who specialise in languages have the opportunity to teach abroad.

Primary and secondary teaching research

Many of the staff who teach on the BA programme are currently involved in research and have published textbooks or contributed articles to key education journals. Dr Mick Allen who teaches primary science has recently had published the text ‘Misconceptions in Primary Science’, which is a valuable text used across all our programmes. Other staff are engaged in work across a wide range of themes that have relevance to primary teaching and learning
