Clinical decision making for paramedics

This module aims to further develop your understanding of the knowledge base, skills and factors that all contribute towards effective clinical decision making.

The module is designed to allow students to explore the theories that underpin effective decision making in the clinical setting. A patient centred approach will be used to explore the knowledge base and factors that can influence decision making in paramedic practice.

Learning outcomes:

Level 5

  1. Apply models and frameworks of decision making to clinical practice.
  2. Discuss the legal, professional and ethical dimension of decision making in paramedic practice.
  3. Evaluate the evidence base that supports clinical decision making in paramedic practice.
  4. Evaluate factors that impact upon paramedics making decisions.
  5. Reflect upon their own practice to enhance their decision making ability.
  6. Communicate a review of a clinical decision making structure in paramedic practice.

Level 6

  1. Critically apply models and frameworks of decision making to clinical practice.
  2. Discuss the legal, professional and ethical dimension of decision making in paramedic practice.
  3. Evaluate the evidence base that supports clinical decision making in paramedic practice.
  4. Critically discuss factors that impact upon paramedics making decisions.
  5. Critically reflect upon their own practice to enhance their decision making ability.
  6. Communicate an evidence based proposal to enhance paramedic practice.

Who is the module for?

  • Students should be registered paramedics with experience of working in the emergency, out of hospital care setting.
