Oncology Practice

This module is available only to registered therapeutic radiographers within the oncology practice pathway. It builds on a pre-existing base knowledge and explores through the use of case based learning, the multidisciplinary approach to cancer management. It provides an opportunity for students to explore and study in depth, the principles and practice of professional radiographers, and encourages the development of advanced roles in radiotherapy services.

Expert speakers also provide key lectures on particular aspects of management and the principals of novel interventions.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Critically discuss the principles underpinning the use of various modalities in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
  2. Explain the principles underpinning the delivery and outcomes of radiotherapy.
  3. Appraise evidence related to developments and practices in cancer care including radiotherapy.
  4. Analyse the role of the multidisciplinary team in the holistic care of cancer patients, their carers and families.
  5. Evaluate practice with regard to current legislation, professional guidelines and codes of conduct including the role of relevant public institutions in the management of cancer.
  6. Critically discuss future developments in cancer management.

Who is the module for? Therapeutic radiographers with at least two years’ full-time clinical experience and a degree/diploma or equivalent in radiography.

Entry criteria:

  • Degree/diploma or equivalent in radiography for Medical Imaging and Oncology pathways or a professional healthcare qualification for the Breast Evaluation pathway
  • Minimum two years’ full-time clinical experience

Number of credits and level of study: 30 credits at level 7

Assessment: Annotated bibliography and case study
