Pulmonary rehabilitation

This module will promote in-depth understanding of the physiological rationale and principles of rehabilitation and the practical and clinical implications of exercise for people with chronic respiratory disease. Respiratory rehabilitation will be considered in different settings (community/ hospital) and different disease populations (such as: COPD, asthma, bronchiectasis, cancer, hyperventilation syndrome, obesity).

Students will develop the knowledge and skills required to design and deliver effective rehabilitation programmes in chronic respiratory conditions and will have the opportunity to discuss and reflect on their own clinical experience.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Critically evaluate the literature concerning pulmonary rehabilitation.
  2. Determine components and elements of an effective pulmonary rehabilitation programme.
  3. Critically appraise outcome measures and their use in the assessment of patients with respiratory disease.
  4. Critically consider strategies to improve adherence with pulmonary rehabilitation and facilitate long term behaviour change for patients with chronic respiratory disease.
  5. Deliver, evaluate and critique practical and theoretical pulmonary rehabilitation strategies.

Entry criteria:

  • Applicants should normally have, or be expected to achieve a 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in a related discipline e.g. sport, healthcare or physiology related subject.
  • If you are an international student, you will also need an English Language qualification such as IELTS 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in each section), or other equivalent recognised language qualification.

Assessment: 2500 word course work
