Prescribing

Allied health professional course suitable for students from a wide variety of professional groups

This interdisciplinary module/course, delivered via blended learning, will enable nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals to prescribe safely and effectively. It is designed for all non-medical health professions permitted by law to prescribe.

Students to be able to apply to record the prescribing short course/module (independent and/or supplementary prescribing) with their professional body as:

  • Practice Certificate in Supplementary Prescribing for Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Members
  • Certificate in Independent and Supplementary Prescribing (V300) for Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Members

Who is the module for?

This course is aimed at nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society who wish to obtain a qualification in prescribing.

Applicants should be registered practitioners with at least two years' experience in practice. You should have a BSc(Hons) degree or provide evidence of your ability to study at masters level. You must also be sponsored by your employer.

Number of credits and level of study: 60 Level of study: 60 credits at level 6. The course is also offered as a postgraduate award (level 7)

Assessment: Examination (50%) and portfolio (50%)

Location: St George's, University of London

Course length: One year: 25 days in-class teaching (approximately one day a week during term time), plus weekly online lessons and discussions; 12 days mentored practice days within the student's workplace.
