Mental health special

This course is aimed at anyone working with young people and involved with their emotional and mental health development. It's not just for nurses, a wide range of professionals will find it very valuable - from health visitors to classroom assistants.

Ian Higgins, a Nurse Consultant for South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust, teaches on the course. We asked him to tell us more about what the course covers and its benefits.

Introducing Chris Hart

Chris Hart leads a double life... he combines a role in clinical practice and service development with the South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust with lecturing and research here in the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences. Chris teaches on our Risk assessment and risk management of suicide and self-harm course. We had a chat with him about the multiple aspects of risk assessment in mental health.

What are the benefits for students in learning about risk assessment?

We're teaching the students how to assess difficult and potentially dangerous situations professionally, and how to make such assessments less frightening. It's often expected that those working in health and social care will deal with clients who could be potentially harmful to themselves or others, but adequate training is often not offered.

Featured postgraduate courses: Advanced healthcare practice in cancer genetics, Surviving cancer and Practice teacher NMC mentor stage 3

From 5 October (application deadline: 24 August)

Advanced healthcare practice in cancer genetics has been running for ten years as a jointly validated five day course with the cancer genetics clinical services at King's, Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals, King's College's healthcare faculty and the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences.

The course is available at Levels 6 and 7, and is ideal if you require current knowledge of genetically determined cancer and the skills to assess cancer risk in families. The course has both an academic and a practice component, and is taught at Guy's Hospital Cancer Genetics Department.

From 8 October  (application deadline: 27 August)

Surviving cancer is an emerging specialty within the cancer field and focuses on the new knowledge and skills required to work with those living with and beyond cancer. The course is strongly influenced by the National Cancer Survival Initiative (NCSI 2008) which developed as a result of recommendations in the Department of Health's Cancer Reform Strategy (2007).

To find out more about the above courses please contact Pat Webb for further information on p.webb@sgul.kingston.ac.uk or 020 8725 2249.

From 12 November (application deadline: 1 October)

Practice teacher NMC mentor stage 3 enables registrants of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to prepare for stage 3 practice teachers. You will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and competence required to meet the NMC defined outcomes for a practice teacher (NMC 2008).
