Featured course: Intensive Care of the Polytrauma Patient
"This course is very special and a first in the UK"
This new and innovative five-day course equips nurses with the specialist knowledge and skills to improve the care of complex major trauma patients.
Course leader Jane Roe combines teaching in the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences with working as a nurse in the General Intensive Care Unit at St George's Hospital. St George's was designated as one of four trauma centres in London in 2009.
Jane, who worked with her colleagues to devise the course, says, "We've found that some nurses working with polytrauma patients have ended up in their jobs by chance and don't feel they've come equipped with all the training they need to perform really well. There isn't yet any formalised training along the lines of what we're offering, so this course is very special and a first in the UK."
Paul Newcombe, Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing, adds: "In response to Lord Darzi's vision for a modern NHS, such as centralisation of specialist services, the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences now offers a package of courses to support the development of staff looking after major trauma patients. Three modules have been designed in collaboration with Trauma Centre managers and staff and tailored to meet the needs of staff at key stages of the patient's journey in the acute setting: Emergency Departments, Intensive Care Units and Trauma Wards."
Read more about the course including dates, location, course content and how to apply - along with an interview with course leader Jane Roe, and links to other related courses.
This course will start on 12 April. For more information and an application form please contact us on cpdpo@sgul.kingston.ac.uk or 020 8725 1755.
