Featured course: HIV care and contemporary interventions

HIV is now considered a manageable long term condition. In England, around 56,000 people are currently living with HIV and accessing healthcare services (Department of Health Review of the National Strategy for Sexual Health and HIV, 2008).

Our short course in HIV care and contemporary interventions offers healthcare practitioners an excellent opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of HIV from a client-centred perspective.

We asked course leader Gemma Hurley to tell us a little more about the course:

What does the course cover?

Practitioners will gain an understanding of the pathophysiology of HIV, explore its psycho-social impact and consider how policy has impacted on screening and the development of innovative management strategies.

Who is the course aimed at?

Healthcare practitioners working in any practice setting providing care to clients who are HIV positive or at risk of acquiring HIV.

What is new about this course?

The course has been recently revised to reflect current trends in HIV care, where issues on stigma, sexual health behaviours and mental health are explored. This will enable practitioners to provide relevant, high quality care for their clients. An emphasis is placed on public health issues, where creative health promotion strategies are explored. This is outlined as a key learning outcome.

Are there other short courses available with a similar emphasis?

Practitioners interested in HIV care and contemporary interventions might also benefit from attending Contemporary issues in the management of people with long term conditions and Sexual health promotion and screening..

Study days in June

If you just want a taster of what it's like to study with us, or you have a specific training need, who not try one of our study days? Coming up in June:

9 and 10 June: Clinical supervision for supervisors - two days
In this two day course practitioners will have the opportunity to examine the principles of clinical supervision and explore ways of implementing these in their own environments. The emphasis will be on reflective practice and there will be opportunities to experience the roles of both supervisor and supervisee in groups and one to one sessions.

11, 18 and 25 June: Short course in leg ulcer management - three days
This three day course is aimed at healthcare practitioners working in hospital, community, residential care or GP surgery settings who wish to gain knowledge and skills in this specific area of practice. (Note: PThese study days are not inteded to give competence in the skills of Doppler ultrasound and compression bandaging by the end of these three study days.)

15 and 16 June: Child immunisation - two day foundation
It is recommended that all nurses involved in the immunisation of children attend every two years. Up-to-date knowledge and practice of intramuscular injection techniques is a pre-requisite for this course.

Aimed at staff from acute/front line services, this study day provides an opportunity to explore issues that people with a learning disability and their family/carers face when accessing these services. Highlighting APL - Sue Heatley
"APL makes studying much more flexible"

Accreditation of prior learning (APL) is an opportunity to be given credit for learning and skills already gained before joining one of the Faculty's courses. This means you can avoid duplicating previous learning and it can help you to:

  • Gain entry into a course even if you don't have some of the required
  •    qualifications
  • Be exempt from certain parts of the course
  • Progress more quickly towards qualifying for the final award.
  •
    APL Advisor Sue Heatley
, who also teaches both midwifery and nursing students and gives careers advice to graduates, explains the procedures behind APL and how it can help you finish your studies faster.

Read Sue's advice to find out more about how you can benefit from the scheme and how to go about using prior learning towards your degree.

You can also make an appointment with Sue, to discuss your particular APL requirements: s.heatley@sgul.kingston.ac.uk
