Dear colleague,

Welcome to the September issue of CPPD: What's New - outlining the latest news, courses and services offered by the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences. Can you believe we are in October already?!

In this issue, our featured course is centred around work-based learning which can be studied at masters level. Work-based learning gives individuals the opportunity to undertake learning which is unique to them and their practice. It can be used to facilitate critical reflection leading to positive change and development in practice.

Our programme of events is expanding at the moment. We are busy planning the final stages of our graduates' and postgraduates' research conference. Come along to meet some of the rising stars of the Faculty, including a finalist for the RCN Fellows Student Nurse Award, our graduate, Neomi Bennet inventor of the Neoslip - an easy way to put on anti-embolism stockings. You can find out how to register for this free conference below.

We look forward to seeing you at the Faculty in the weeks ahead.

Best wishes,

The CPPD team

Work-based LearningFeatured course: Work-based learning

In this new masters level module, students are required to identify learning objectives in their workplace which provide the opportunity for personal, professional and organisational development. The student will be responsible and accountable for developing, managing and achieving these objectives with the support of a Faculty academic supervisor.

This module can also be used to accredit new or existing courses for groups of staff. This includes courses which are delivered in-house and also bespoke courses delivered by the Faculty.

To be eligible staff should:

  • Be employed in or have access to an organisation within which the work-based learning can take place
  • Be working at an advancing occupational level within the organisation. This will enable them to undertake learning which is equal to the level of the work-based learning project they are pursuing
  • Have the support of their employer in terms of time, resources and advice
  • Identify and have access to a mentor in their workplace who is able to support them and to critically comment on the progress and outcomes of their learning.

Students will be required to complete a portfolio of their work for assessment. However an alternative form of assessment can be negotiated.

For more information and enquiries related to accreditation of bespoke or in-service courses please contact Paul Newcombe, our Employer-Led Work-Based Learning Co-ordinator tel: 020 8725 3801 or email: P.Newcombe@sgul.kingston.ac.uk
