“Critical reflection is widely accepted in professional education, especially as a way of learning from experience. In my own experience of working with critical reflection with a range of professionals, I find that it works really well to articulate and represent the experiences of professional practice in a way which other research methods might not. It appears to help practitioners articulate their own experience, and the meaning of it, in complex ways. In the course of undertaking a critical reflection process, for example, people are able to refind and reaffirm fundamental values, and find a place for their own integrity within the restrictions of their jobs. This seminar explores how and whether critical reflection might be conceptualised as a research method which investigates such aspects of professional practice, but also assists people in learning from, and reworking, their own practice experience.”
Jan Fook is Professor of Professional Practice Research and Director of the Interprofessional Institute (SWan). She has had a long term interest in critical reflection in professional education, and extensive experience in running workshops for practising professionals. A recent book of hers is J. Fook & F. Gardner 92007) Practising Critical Reflection, Open University Press.
