Identifying and treating neuropathic pain
Presented by Iain Beith, Head of School of Physiotherapy.
Back pain and associated leg pain are a common problem, with the vast majority of us experiencing these symptoms at some point in our lives. It doesn’t help that we don’t know the cause and origin of the pain in over 85% of these cases.
This seminar will explore the possibility of classifying the problem by the underlying pain mechanism: either nociceptive, where the problem is pathology within the tissues, or neuropathic, where the problem is within the nervous system. While this distinction is somewhat contentious, it is helpful in trying to untangle the uncertainties.
Data collected from NHS patients will be presented and discussed, as will the implications of this data for the future management of the problem.
Lunch will be provided from 12.45pm.
