The quality of nursing care is under intense public scrutiny. Sally Brearley has been appointed to Chair the new Nursing and Care Quality Forum for England. We are delighted she has agreed to come and talk before the formal launch. Rather than giving a lecture, Sally will briefly outline the remit of the Forum and then she is keen to hear from the audience. How can nurses and other health-care staff be better supported to deliver the kind and compassionate care they came into the NHS to provide? What are the barriers to this and how might they be overcome?
Sally Brearly trained as a physiotherapist in Manchester in the 1970s and completed a BSc in Nursing Studies at King’s College London in 1988. She also has an MA in Social Anthropology from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
Sally has been actively involved in patient representation for many years, including membership of Community Health Councils, Patient and Public Involvement Forums and Local Involvement Networks (LINks). She was a member of the NHS Constitutional Advisory Forum, the Organ Donation Taskforce and the NHS Future Forum.
Currently Sally is one of four Lay Members on the National Quality Board and holds visiting fellowships in patient and public involvement at the National Nursing Research Unit, King’s College London, and the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences.
