Domestic violence against women and men in Europe (DoVE) - challenges in conducting a cross-national prevalence study
Presented by Dr Eleni Hatzidimitriadou
Domestic violence (DV) is increasingly seen as an important public health issue, because it is present in every country and it can affect every person, independently of the social, economic and individual characteristics of people. Research about DV is focussed usually on women as victims and men as perpetrators, and an underlying notion is that it pertains primarily to a culturally supported male enterprise and that female violence is always defensive and reactive. However, investigation about the prevalence of DV among both sexes, and its risk factors and effects has not attracted much attention in Europe. To the extent that such information exists it tends mainly to be based on crime and care surveys (eg. the British Crime Survey), with findings indicating more DV against women than men and more serious consequences (for example health) for women.
This project 'Domestic violence against women and men in Europe: prevalence, determinants, effects, and policies/practices' (DoVE) is the first cross-European population study on DV against women and men which aims to address the weaknesses of the present knowledge by using uniform procedures, definitions, concepts/models, and already developed appropriate instruments to examine the DV situation for women and men, its predictors and effects; it is also comparing current policies/practices concerning DV in the participating EU countries.
This presentation will discuss the challenges of implementing a unified methodological approach across countries and some fieldwork challenges such conducting a European study on this sensitive topic by using a multi-level survey questionnaire as well as facing recruitment issues in the UK and other partner countries. Some preliminary findings in relation to the UK sample will also be presented.
About the Faculty Research Seminar Series
This free fortnightly lunchtime seminar series, hosted by Professor Vari Drennan and Nan Greenwood, aims to:
- share the research being undertaken in the Faculty
- offer an opportunity for debate and exchange of ideas
- provide an opportunity for meeting others interested in health and social care research.
All are welcome.
