New report on primary care and community nursing

Professor of Health Policy and Service Delivery Vari Drennan, and Kathy Davis, have produced a report entitled "Trends over ten years in the primary care and community nursing workforce in England". The report gives a new analysis of the trends in the numbers, demographics and turnover of nursing and support to nursing staff employed in primary care and community nursing.

The analysis provides new insights for commissioners and providers of services and education at a time when government policy is focusing on increased provision of health services outside of hospitals. It adds to current knowledge on the statistics published by the Department of Health because it considers both professionally qualified nurses and other groups such as healthcare assistants.

The report also considers the workforce by service area (such as services to children, families and young people) rather than by professional qualifications (such as health visiting), and provides information on groups that are not usually considered such as staff nurses in district nursing services and contraceptive nurses.
