Applications invited for funded places for MRes in Clinical Practice for health professionals

Photograph of student browsing journalsHealth professionals in England have the opportunity to advance their careers with a fully funded postgraduate degree at the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences.

The Faculty is providing ten studentships on a full-time Masters in Research (MRes) in Clinical Practice course each year, for the next three years.

This follows a £1.7 million grant awarded to the Faculty by the Chief Nursing Officer for England and the National Institute for Health Research, as part of a national drive to boost clinical academic career pathways in the NHS. The Faculty was chosen as one of only seven centres in England to be awarded funding for clinical academic career training.

About the course

The Faculty’s one year MRes Clinical Practice combines practical and academic study to prepare professionals for leadership and management in clinical research. It provides an insight into the skills and techniques used by cutting edge researchers to develop vital breakthroughs in health and medical practice. These include selecting methodologies, statistical gathering and analysis techniques, drawing conclusions and communicating findings to a wide range of audiences.

Dr Chris Tye, who co-led the development of the course, says: “By the end of the course healthcare professionals will be equipped with all the skills they need to participate fully as a clinical researcher in the academic community - whether through engagement in studies, debate and discussion, by presenting at clinical meetings and conferences, or by publishing their work in clinical journals.”

The next course starts in October 2009. Funding covers salary costs and fees for NHS staff seconded to the course for one year of full time study. Nurses, midwives and allied health professionals sited in England with at least one year’s clinical experience and an honours degree in a health or social care-related subject are eligible to apply.

By the end of the course you will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a specific area of applied clinical research relevant to your own area of professional clinical practice.
