Head of School of Social Work named Vice-Chair of General Social Care Council

Hilary TompsettHilary Tompsett, Head of the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences' School of Social Work, has been named Vice-Chair of the General Social Care Council (GSCC). She will take up this role on 1 May 2010.

The GSCC is responsible for setting standards of conduct and practice for social care workers and their employers, for workforce regulation, and for regulating social work education and training.

Hilary has lectured at Kingston University since 1991, and been Head of the Faculty's School of Social Work since 1997. She is a qualified and registered social worker with 15 years' experience as a practitioner and manager, and has worked with children and families, people with mental health problems and older people.

In addition to her post in the Faculty, Hilary is Chair of the Joint University Council Social Work Education Committee (JUC SWEC), which represents higher education institutions nationally to government departments and other organisations across the UK. She also sits on the Social Work Reform Board tasked with carrying out the reforms to social work identified in the Government Implementation Plan of March 2010. More regionally, Hilary is Chair of the Surrey and Sussex Social Work Education Group and has been Chair and member of a number of national working groups on workforce development and social work education.

Hilary first joined the Council in 2008, and will replace Melanie Henwood as Vice-Chair, who held the role for eight years.

Rosie Varley, Cair of the GSCC, said, “I am pleased to welcome Hilary Tompsett as the new Vice-Chair. Her breadth of experience will be integral in ensuring public protection and the highest standards in workforce regulation. This is an exciting time for social work and the GSCC is at the forefront of the drive underway to build a strong profession for the future.”
