About HEART

Health Exercise and Rehabilitation Training Research Centre

The HEART Research Centre brings together healthcare academics and professionals to conduct leading research into the role of exercise in health.

As treatment for many diseases improves, there is an increasing focus on the quality of life for people living with long term conditions or surviving life threatening illnesses such as cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis. Our work demonstrates that exercise can make a significant contribution to improving quality of life in these patients.

Our research focuses on exploring the effects of exercise on a range of psychological, physical, physiological and biological variables. These variables may impact on the underlying disease or consequences of the condition.

The aim of HEART is to enable healthcare academics, researchers and professionals (whether individuals or groups) from a wide range of backgrounds to access the expertise and experience of our multi-disciplinary team. This includes:

  • professionals working within the NHS, such as doctors, nurses and physiotherapists
  • academics in a range of fields, such as sports science, psychology, biomechanics, physiology, immunology, nutrition and oncology
  • professionals in the sports and leisure industries with an interest in promoting healthy lifestyle options.

HEART provides a framework to support applications for research and enterprise funding, and to support publication.
