Biography
Having joined the Faculty in 2002, Ann leads an established multidisciplinary team of researchers currently investigating the psychosocial impact of stroke on family carers. Excellent working relationships with the acute and rehabilitation units at St George’s Hospital and the Wolfson Rehabilitation Centre have enhanced this work and resulted in research funding, high quality publications related to stroke, and postgraduate studentships.
Ann’s clinical background has been mainly in community nursing. She moved into teaching and academic work in the late 1980s and has spent four years at King’s College London and nine years at the Chinese University of Hong Kong where she was head of the Department of Nursing. Ann’s research interests are in the care and rehabilitation of older people and the psychosocial aspects of long-term illness experienced by stroke survivors and their family carers. She has published extensively on these subjects with the aim of contributing evidence for clinical practice.
Ann has actively established formal links between the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences. This has resulted in staff exchanges that promote shared educational and research activities.
Interests
Rehabilitation following stroke; long-term needs of family carers in British and Chinese populations; psychosocial interventions and outcomes for stroke survivors and their family carers; promotion of healthy ageing.
