Biography

Hafez is a medically qualified chemical pathologist/biochemist. He has worked as a chemical pathologist or medical biochemist, after spending two years in clinical practice as a trainee physician, and is currently a senior lecturer. Hafez teaches pathophysiology and clinical reasoning, research methods and statistics, pharmacology and toxicology and more to nurses, physiotherapists, radiographers, midwives, medical students and postgraduate medical trainees (courses organised by St George’s for the Royal College of Psychatrists membership – Neurochemistry and neuro-pharmacology).

Hafez’s PhD work was carried out in the Gastroenterology department at St George’s Medical School during 1985–1987 and was focused on the mechanisms of formation of gallstones and the transport of cholesterol by the liver. His MSc was centred round the liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) focusing on proteolytic activity of the fluke and how to treat patients with that illness. Hafez is a Dip-RCPath (Chemical Pathology) since June 2000.

Interests

Teaching using different strategies, particularly E-learning, researching the gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary pathophysiology, obesity, the metabolic syndrome and diabetes, clinical practice within the field of clinical biochemistry or chemical pathology and toxicology.
