Biography
Jan has social work degrees from the Universities of New South Wales and Sydney and has worked as a social work and welfare academic for the past 30 years. She is currently Director of the Interprofessional Institute (Health & Social Care) and Professor of Professional Practice Research, Royal Holloway, University of London. Prior to that, she was Head of Social Work at the University of Southampton. She has also held professorial appointments at Deakin University (where she wrote and established a new social work programme) and La Trobe University (where she established and directed the Centre for Professional Development, providing short course training to health and social care professionals). She has published 13 books and over 70 book chapters and articles. She is regularly invited to present workshops and keynote addresses internationally.
Interests
Professional practice, especially developing relevant methods for researching professional practice. Critical reflection and the links between its use for learning and research. Empirical research of critical reflection, including systematic studies of its incidence and usage, and outcome studies. Critical perspectives on social work practice and the development of social work practice theory.
