Biography
After qualifying and practising as a nurse, Jane qualified as a midwife. She practiced midwifery for nine years, working in the special care baby unit, labour ward, antenatal/postnatal wards and antenatal clinic, and progressed on to become a senior sister.
Her responsibilities included being in charge of the maternity unit at times, mentoring students, organising and implementing the Parent Education Programme and participating in the implementation of team midwifery (team leader). She was a member of the Antenatal Clinic Working Party (development of the Antenatal Protocol); the District Procedures Committee; Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Professional Advisory Committee and Curriculum Management Team.
Jane’s current responsibilities as senior lecture include teaching and assessing students on the Diploma in HE/BSc (Hons) Midwifery; module leader for ‘Foundation for midwifery practice’, ‘Introduction to midwifery practice’ (double module), ‘Anatomy and physiology applied to midwifery’ and ‘Midwifery Profession and Practice’ (double module); teaching on the BSc Health Care Practice/Continuing Professional Development programme and post registration study days; recruitment and selection of students for Diploma in HE/BSc (Hons) in Midwifery; cohort leader for Diploma in HE/BSc (Hons) three-year programme; personal tutor for selected midwifery students; liaison lecturer to Epsom maternity unit; audit of selected maternity placements; and providing in-service education for midwives in the different commissioning NHS Trusts. She is a member of the Programme Assessment Board and Module Assessment Board (midwifery pre-registration programmes), Midwifery Field Board and Faculty Quality Committee.
Jane was a Member of the Editorial Board for the British Journal of Midwifery from 2000–2006, and participated in a focus group discussion to set up the British Journal of Midwifery on line. She was also series editor for ‘Current Issues in Midwifery’ from 2002–2006.
