Biography
After qualifying and practising as a nurse, Jane qualified as a midwife. She practiced midwifery for nine years, working in the special care baby unit, labour ward, antenatal/postnatal wards and antenatal clinic, and progressed on to become a senior sister.
Her responsibilities included being in charge of the maternity unit at times, mentoring students, organising and implementing the Parent Education Programme and participating in the implementation of team midwifery (team leader). She was a member of the Antenatal Clinic Working Party (development of the Antenatal Protocol); District Procedures Committee; Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Professional Advisory Committee and Curriculum Management Team for the undergraduate midwifery course.
Jane’s current responsibilities as senior lecturer include teaching and assessing students on the BSc (Hons) in Midwifery, MSc in Maternal and Child Health and a range of continuing personal and professional development courses.
Jane was a member of the editorial board for the British Journal of Midwifery from 2000–2006. She was also series editor for ‘Current Issues in Midwifery’ from 2002–2006.

HIV and midwifery; perinatal mental health.
