Biography

Nan's background is in social psychology. In the past she has worked in market and opinion research and as both an HE and FE lecturer teaching social sciences and health studies. She moved into academic research a decade ago and has experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods and systematic reviews.

Much of Nan's earlier research was in addictions and community mental health where she was involved in a range of studies, including research focusing on in-patient experiences and on mental health services. More recently she undertook a systematic review of Mental Health Act detention rates amongst different ethnic groups, which demonstrated a considerable excess of detentions amongst patients described as ‘black’. Ethnicity and diversity are areas of interest and another strand of research looked at the under-representation of students from ethnic minorities in allied health professions such as physiotherapy and speech and language therapy.

Currently Nan is working with Professor Ann Mackenzie and Nikki Wilson in research about informal carers of stroke survivors. There are several projects underway. The main qualitative research looks at the experiences of informal carers of stroke survivors using depth interviews and literature reviews. Using this background, they are about to embark on an intervention study to determine the effectiveness and acceptability of a problem solving intervention with informal carers.
