Biography

Nan's background is in social psychology. In the past she has worked in market and opinion research and as both an HE and FE lecturer teaching social sciences and health studies. She moved into academic research over a decade ago and has experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods and systematic reviews.

Much of Nan's earlier research was in addictions and community mental health where she was involved in a range of studies, including research focusing on in-patient experiences and on mental health services. Past research in mental health has included a systematic review looking at Mental Health Act detention rates amongst different ethnic groups, which demonstrated a considerable excess of detentions amongst patients described as ‘black’ but also identified the lack of available evidence to explain this excess. Ethnicity and diversity are general areas of interest and another strand of research looked at the under-representation of students from ethnic minorities in allied health professions such as physiotherapy and speech and language therapy.

Nan works with Professor Ann Mackenzie in research on informal carers – both research about carers in general and carers of stroke survivors. Her publications have included several systematic reviews and reports of projects investigating the experiences of carers of stroke survivors. Recently she has looked at the role of general practitioners in supporting informal carers. She is currently working with Crossroads (a voluntary sector organisation who support carers) evaluating a peer mentoring scheme and respite service. Nan is also evaluating a peer volunteer mentoring for carers of people with dementia funded by the Modernisation Initiative.
