Nigel Elliott is a qualified social worker and probation officer with practitioner, manager and training officer experience. He achieved the Advanced Award in Social Work (portfolio route) in 2000 while working as a senior practitioner with South East London Probation Service. Two publications (Working with Structural and Ideological Change: An Example from Probation, 2001; Portfolio Creation, Action Research and the Learning Environment: A Study from Probation, 2003) drew substantially on the work required in producing the AASW portfolio.

Nigel has been employed since 2001 as a principal lecturer and programme director of undergraduate social work studies at Kingston University. He took a lead a role in the planning and validation of the current BA (Hons) in Social Work (commenced 2003) and oversaw the closing of the Diploma in Social Work. He teaches across all parts of the programme and is the lead for penology and criminal justice law and practice. He also supervises dissertations on the professional post-qualifying Masters programmes.

In 2006 he received a PhD by publication in social work from Kingston University. Submitted publications covered a 20 year period and tracked the changing ethical, policy and practice environment of social work and probation during this period.
