Biography
Robert joined the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences in July 2010 with a role of providing advice and help for researchers who are undertaking some quantitative / data analysis / statistical aspect to their work. He also assists with teaching a statistics module in the Master of Research in Clinical Practice (MResCP) course.
Robert previously worked as medical statistician for the Royal College of Physicians of London for 12 years, during which time he analysed large clinical audit datasets on stroke, falls and bone health, back pain, depression screening in occupational health for NHS staff, carotid endarterectomy surgery, familial hypercholesterolaemia, and generic medical record-keeping standards. He was also part of the team commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to develop evidence-based clinical guidelines on various long-term conditions; this role also included carrying out meta-analyses and giving statistical advice to colleagues doing systematic reviews and health economic modelling.
Robert's first degree was in mathematical sciences, followed by a diploma in statistics and an MSc from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where his dissertation was entitled 'Alternative composite indicators for comparing hospitals on the quality of care received by inpatients following stroke'.
Interests
Increasing statistical input to the development and reporting of healthcare quality indicators, particularly sensitivity of composite indicators and league table-type comparisons; applying multivariate statistical methods to complex healthcare data; techniques for dealing with missing data and measurement error; statistical adjustments for residual confounding (where data are inappropriately dichotomised and information is lost); modelling contiguous waiting time data across a care journey.
