Biography

Vari joined the academic community after working as a senior community health service manager and professional head of community nursing. She has undertaken a wide range of research concerned with health and social care services for older people, especially those with long term conditions; medicine management in community settings; health service provision for women, particularly those socially excluded; new roles and workforce developments in primary care; and clinical leadership at board level. All of her research activities involve service users. She is particularly interested in the interface between policy and practice in arenas where public service delivery involves multiple agencies.

Interests

  • Health and social care for older people, with particular interests in services for people with dementia and their carers outside of hospitals; medicine management issues for older people with complex health and social care problems living at home; and interprofessional working across primary health care and social care.
  • Changing health and social care professional and service boundaries, associated management and workforce development issues and resource management.
  • Health and social care services for people with long term conditions and the development of care and case management roles, the role of new technologies and perceptions of risk management.
  • The development of non-medical prescribing.
  • Long standing interests in public and service user involvement and public health delivery and marginalised groups.
