Staff profile: Dr Eleni Hatzidimitriadou
Dr Eleni Hatzidimitriadou is a qualified clinical psychologist and an experienced mental health researcher. She holds a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, an MSc in Clinical Psychology (both from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece) and a PhD in Psychology (University of Kent, UK). In her doctoral study entitled 'Self-Help/Mutual Aid Groups In Mental Health: Ideology, Helping Mechanisms, And Empowerment', Eleni applied participatory research methods to explore the nature and character of user-led groups in mental health and examined the effect of group participation on members' personal empowerment, perceived social support and psychological wellbeing. To explore these issues, Eleni collaborated with mental health user-led groups and organisations in London and south-east England and over a period of two years while attending group meetings on a regular basis as participant observer.
Eleni has long-term experience in mental health services and service user issues, working as a cognitive -behaviour therapist and a researcher in Greece and the UK. Before joining Kingston & St George's she held a lecturer post at the University of Kent's European Centre for Migration and Social Care. She has developed research and published peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on self-help and mutual aid for socially excluded populations; welfare and social care in old age, and health and social care of migrants and ethnic minorities. She has a strong record of international research collaborations and networks in the field of migration, social exclusion and policy development. Projects include a three-year German Volkswagen Foundation funded study on the role of cultural capital in youth migrant transitions into the labour market, and an EU funded research network on the sexual reproductive health rights of refugees and asylum seekers. More recently, Eleni has successfully secured funding from the Public Health European Authority to conduct a 30-month study on the prevalence, determinants, effects, policies and practices related to domestic violence against women and men in Europe, in partnership with seven European countries.
She is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Migration, Health and Social Care, and has acted as guest editor in a number of special issues: welfare issues of migrant women – IJMHSC (November 2007); forced migration and social care - Hellenic Journal of Psychology (October 2008); service user participation of ethnic minorities and migrants – IJMHSC (January 2009). Additionally, she serves on the steering committee of a national body related to the mental health of ethnic minorities and the development of relevant training for the Department of Health workforce (BME Programme Board Workforce, Education and Training Sub-Group, National Institute for Mental Health England).
