About the Centre for Paramedic Science
The Centre for Paramedic Science brings together expertise and resources from education, research and ambulance services to support the development of the paramedic profession in the UK and overseas.
We work collaboratively with employers including the London Ambulance Service and the South East Coast Ambulance Service. These close partnerships ensure that our courses have both a professional and an academic focus.
We call our approach the ‘university in the service’.
Our courses are designed to:
- enable students to achieve their potential and be competitive in the workplace
- provide opportunities for progression to an honours degree
- use the latest education technologies to deliver work-based learning
- offer flexibility to study effectively while still working.
Learning takes place in a variety of settings: as part of a group in the Faculty; as part of a team when working with NHS Ambulance Trusts; and during personal study with e-learning resources, for example using online virtual worlds such as ‘Second Life.’

Research and development
As well as offering courses, the Centre also provides a hub for research and development projects in the UK and internationally.
Current research themes include:
- Clinical decision-making of emergency care practitioners/paramedic practitioners;
- Referral for falls prevention, and intervention for older people who use the ambulance service after a fall;
- Educational interventions in emergency management of police and paramedics liaison in firearms situations.
Our international initiatives have both an academic and a service focus. We work with colleagues from universities and ambulance services around the world to develop best practice. We are currently working with colleagues in Australia, Brunei, Egypt, Gibraltar, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
