The Accelerated In-Service Foundation Degree
Our Accelerated In-Service Foundation Degree is a part-time course of two or three years' duration, designed for:
- Practising ambulance technicians who hold an IHCD Ambulance Technician Award and have evidence of continuing professional development (two year part-time course)
- Emergency care/A&E support workers who have undertaken an in-house training scheme (three year part-time course)
The course is sponsored by your employing ambulance trust.
On completion of the course you will graduate with a nationally recognised Foundation Degree in Paramedic Science, and will be eligible to apply for paramedic registration with the Health Professions Council. You may also have the opportunity to progress to a BSc Honours degree.
Course overview
The course is designed to be flexible, allowing you to fit your study around work and personal commitments. You will spend one day a week at university, which will be the same day every week within each academic year, enabling your employer to schedule your work shifts around this.
You will study many of the same modules covered by the Foundation Degree for new entrants to the paramedic profession, but the in-service course is tailored to reflect the significant skills and knowledge already acquired as an existing technician or support worker.
As different people enjoy learning in different ways, we use a variety of teaching and learning methods. When at university, you will attend lectures and undertake group work. The remainder of your study will be a combination of online learning, self-directed study and extensive practical work-based learning.
Examples of modules studied in the course:
- Foundations of Paramedic Science
- Emergency Out of Hospital Care
- Paramedic Portfolio
