David began his working life as a youth worker in New Zealand, before qualifying in 1990 as a social worker in Australia. As a social worker, he has worked in adoption and permanent care, paediatric acute healthcare, adult acute healthcare, and allied health management and research development roles. David has been a full-time academic since 2007 and has taught social work at La Trobe University, The University of Melbourne, London Metropolitan University, and Middlesex University, before joining Kingston and St George's in 2015. David's research and knowledge development interests have centred on social work practice in healthcare, professional supervision, organisational management, clinical data-mining and application of practice theory.
