Biography

Hafez is a medically qualified chemical pathologist/biochemist. He teaches pathophysiology and clinical reasoning, research methods and statistics, pharmacology and toxicology to student nurses, physiotherapists, radiographers and midwives as well as to medical students and postgraduate medical trainees.

His PhD work (1985-1987) was carried out in the gastroenterology department at St George's Hospital and focused on the mechanisms of formation of gallstones and the transport of cholesterol by the liver. His MSc centred around the liver fluke (fasciola hepatica) focusing on proteolytic activity of the fluke and how to treat patients with that illness.

Hafez has developed an international reputation in the field of bile acids and gallstone pathogenesis and has delivered invited lectures at a range of events Europe-wide.
