Biography

Dr Jayne Marshall, former associate professor of midwifery at the University of Nottingham, is currently the Head of the School of Midwifery.

Jayne is an experienced midwife, lecturer and external examiner, having been instrumental in developing and implementing new midwifery and interprofessional curricula across the range of academic levels. Jayne also holds the position of visiting lecturer at the University of Malta.

Her particular interests lie in the complexities surrounding professional issues, law and ethics relating to midwifery practice, a subject on which she has written a number of publications. Furthermore, Jayne has a wealth of experience in co-editing key midwifery text books which include:

ï‚· Decision Making in Midwifery Practice (Elsevier 2005 and in 2006 published in Japanese)
ï‚· Advancing Skills in Midwifery Practice (Elsevier 2010 and in 2013 published in Indonesian)
ï‚· Midwifery Practice: Critical Illness, Complications and Emergencies Case Book (Open University Press 2012)

She has also written a number of chapters for Midwifery by Ten Teachers in the popular Ten Teachers series by Hodder Arnold.

Jayne also co-edited the 16th edition of Myles Textbook for Midwives (the world's best-selling seminal midwifery textbook) with her former colleague at Nottingham, Maureen Raynor, published by Elsevier. This has been adapted to be used in Sub-Saharan Africa, resulting in the publication of the 3rd edition of the African edition of Myles textbook for midwives in 2015.

In addition to being a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, the Doctoral Midwives Research Society and DePartu: History of Midwifery Research Group, Jayne is also a member of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Research Standing Committee, of which she is Chair of the Knowledge and Capacity Building Group, the ICM Research Advisory Network and the ICM Midwifery Education Network.

Jayne is a peer reviewer for the ICM triennial Congresses and regularly undertakes peer reviews for the international journals Midwifery, Nurse Education Today and Nurse Education in Practice, for which she was guest peer reviewer for a midwifery education special edition in 2012. She is also an associate editor of the International Journal of Childbirth and sits on the editorial board of MIDIRS Digest and Essentially MIDIRS journal.

In 2012, Jayne was awarded one of the University of Nottingham's prestigious Lord Dearing Awards in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the development of teaching and student learning. A year later, this was followed by being the winner of the Royal College of Midwives' Annual Johnson's Baby Award for Excellence in Midwifery Education.
