Biography

Maria is an associate professor in the School of Nursing and course director for the MSc in Healthcare Education and Clinical Leadership. She teaches applied psychology to nursing, midwifery and social work students, and supervises a range of MSc and BSc research projects across various healthcare topics. Maria is also a registered nurse, a midwife and a health psychologist. In the past she has worked as an ITU nurse and a night sister as well as a hospital and community midwife.

In 2005 Maria was successful in winning a bid for £69,000 from the British Council for a Bridge 1 Project, one of only seven projects awarded nationally. The project involved writing a curriculum for an MSc in Healthcare Education and Management which was subsequently validated in Pavlov State Medical University, St Petersburg, Russia in September 2006, where 17 Russian students graduated with masters, diplomas and certificates. Although the course is now closed in St Petersburg, it is successfully running at Kingston University.

Maria is a visiting professor to Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences in Finland. She has delivered a series of international lectures to social work and nursing students at universities in Finland, Poland and Russia including:

>> The Psychology of Human Ageing: Kemi-Tornio University, Finland.
>> Nursing in the new Millennium: Keynote lecture at the inauguration of the new Faculty of Nursing, Lomza, Poland.
>> Psychology of Human Ageing and Images of Ageing: Pomor State University, Archangel, Russia.

Working closely with the staff from Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences and their collaborators, Maria is currently helping to write a joint research bid under the Erasmus Multilateral Projects/EU Lifelong Learning Programme. The aim is to research the experience of older people in seven countries, in order to improve the quality of life of this age group.
