Biography

Nan's background is in social psychology. She has been in academic research for two decades and is a mixed methods researcher with experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods. She has particular expertise in systematic reviews and has published her reviews widely.
Much of Nan's earlier research was in addictions and community mental health where she was involved in a range of studies, including research focusing on in-patient experiences and on mental health services. Ethnicity and diversity are particular areas of interest and she has investigated published research relating to ethnicity and detentions under the Mental Health Act and the under-representation of students from ethnic minorities in allied health professions.
Nan's current research is primarily focused on looking at informal or family carers - both research about carers in general and carers of stroke survivors and of people with dementia. She is particularly interested in improving understanding of carer diversity, satisfactions in the caring role and peer support for carers. Her publications include many systematic reviews and primary research studies. She has worked extensively with local voluntary sector carers organisations investigating and evaluating their services.
Nan recently completed a large qualitative NIHR-SSCR funded project looking at experiences and satisfaction with social care amongst carers from different ethnic groups. This project involved interviews and focus groups with carers and required collaboration with several local voluntary organisations and the stroke unit at St George's Hospital. It resulted in numerous publications and included both descriptions of the findings and a methodological paper.
Currently, Nan is working on an investigation of carers' experiences of dementia cafés and an evaluation of a project supporting young carers. She has three PhD students and also supervises MSc students. She is also a member of the Commissioning Panel for the Department of Health Policy Research Programme and reviews for many journals and grant awarding bodies.
