Kathryn moved to London from Wales to train as a nurse, and qualified as a registered nurse in 1991. She worked at Kingston Hospital and then at Atkinson Morley's Hospital in the intensive care unit for seven years, before becoming a health visitor and later a designated nurse for looked after children and young people.

Kathryn went on to become a senior lecturer in public health and primary care.

She has specialist interests and lectures in clinical supervision, domestic abuse and pre-post natal depression. She is also the lead for Practice Innovation within the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education.
