Heather qualified as a registered nurse in 1977 from The McDonald Buchannan School of Nursing. She has been involved in nurse education since 1986 when she moved from practice to become a clinical teacher in the Carshalton School of Nursing, and during that period has seen many changes in the delivery of nursing care and healthcare education.

Heather teaches on both pre- and post-registration nursing programmes. She is module leader for renal modules and Prescribing for NMC Registrants as well as being a personal tutor to a range of students. She is involved in planning assessment schedules across the School of Nursing and, as an assessor, believes that feedback is essential to student development and encourages exploration of students' perceptions to change thought processes and understanding.

Heather has also been involved with supporting students with numeracy skills and has developed interactive teaching tools delivered through a virtual learning environment.
