Katherine's own education in a variety of very different schools gave her an understanding that there are many different ways in which to approach teaching and learning, and education has been an area of interest for her from a young age.
After a degree in Sociology, she trained to teach Social Studies and taught in an innovative, student centred 14 - 19 community college. After which she moved into the area of working with disengaged secondary pupils. She found herself drawn to the primary sector, and worked with children with EAL. When she began to do this through Art (building on earlier practice with disaffected young people) she became even more convinced of the value and importance of this area of the curriculum. She took an MA in Art Education, and became an Art Specialist in Primary schools for many years. Katherine combined this with lecturing in Art Education, first at London Metropolitan University, and now at Kingston, where she has been for 9 years.
My particular areas of interest are; Family Art workshops (currently with refugee families), and encouraging children's collaboration in Art, and an understanding that art does not exist as separate from the wider society. I am currently working on doing this in through a project about Art Movements.
I act as a freelance Art Education Consultant advising on various aspects of Primary Art Education and delivering Inset.
