Michelle is a registered nurse. She holds a BSc in health studies and an MSc in nursing studies. Her dissertation focused on patient comfort whilst in hospital and introduced comfort rounds to the clinical areas.

She has set up a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) called Nurses Reaching Out (NRO), which is registered in Uganda. Working in Northern Uganda, NRO is concerned with improving patient experience, the environment of care and ongoing nursing knowledge and education. Michelle was awarded staff social entrepreneur 2014 for this work, which also includes offering student nurses elective placement experience in Uganda.

Michelle is a member of the editorial board for the British Journal of Nursing.

Her key areas of teaching interest include: care of older adults, long term conditions and clinical decision making.

Michelle is currently field lead for two cohorts of BSc and PGDip adult nursing students. She is also a liaison lecturer for St Anthony's hospital and St Raphael's hospice.
