Interview programme The interview day begins at 11am with a welcome, introductions and refreshments. In the morning we’ll review the documents we’ve asked you to bring (see below for details), you will hear a presentation about the programme and your interview will take place in the afternoon. We don’t like to turn candidates away from an interview but if you haven’t brought the required documents, you will be offered an alternative interview date as the University needs these documents to consider your application for the course. Download the List of documents you must bring with you [PDF] Download, print and complete the School of Midwifery Criminal Records Self-Declaration Form [PDF] Preparing for your interview In 2011 Kingston University implemented a more innovative way of interviewing candidates for our midwifery programmes, called ‘multiple-mini interviews’ (MMIs). The MMI approach is a robust and efficient assessment method that is less subjective than a panel interview, ensuring that candidates are treated fairly. The aim is to establish whether you have the appropriate skills and attributes to complete the course successfully and to practise professionally. During the MMI you’ll undertake a cycle of five assessment stations with six tasks, scenarios or questions. Each station will assess some of the key characteristics identified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council in their review of pre-registration midwifery education, allowing us to ascertain your suitability for midwifery training. These characteristics are identified in the Student Midwife Person Specification (see below). As you’re attending an interview for a professional qualification, we expect you to dress appropriately and present yourself in a professional manner. It is important that you feel comfortable and we don’t expect you to go out and buy new clothing specifically for the interview. Our advice is to consider the message you’re conveying when planning how to present yourself and what to wear for the interview. Student Midwife Person Specification In applying to be a student midwife, you’re not only applying for a place on a university course but also for a future career. The assessments you’ll undertake in the multiple-mini interview will investigate how well you meet these skills and qualities. Download the Student Midwife Person Specification [PDF] Student Learning Contract Our Student Learning Contract outlines the respective responsibilities of midwifery students and the School of Midwifery during your course. It also confirms that you understand and agree to follow relevant practice and behaviours from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct and the Kingston University Code of Student Behaviour. The Student Learning Contract will be referred to during your interview. Please read it carefully before the interview and selection day and consider how the key features in the contract will affect you and how you will adapt to the course. Download, print and sign the Student Learning Contract [PDF] Occupational health As a student midwife you need to have a reasonable level of physical fitness. You may be required, for example, to get on and off the floor, transfer patients, be on your feet for a long period of time and manoeuvre pieces of equipment. All candidates who are offered a place on the course are required to complete an occupational health questionnaire and offers are subject to occupational health clearance. Students with registered disabilities will be assessed by occupational health and, where possible, reasonable adjustments will be made in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act 2004. If you have any health problems you feel may impact on your midwifery studies, we recommend that you discuss this informally with the admissions tutor or admissions staff either while waiting for your MMI or on completion of your MMI. How to find us The interview day will take place at our Kingston Hill campus. Kingston University has three main campuses – the Kingston Hill campus is about a mile from Kingston town centre (around 15 minutes by bus). Temporary permits are available from the reception desk in the Stable Block on arrival, and are valid for parking in Car Park D. The day is for you to find out what you can expect from the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education as a student midwife, as well as what we will expect from you in return. After your interview You’ll be advised formally via UCAS of the outcome of your interview. This is usually done at the end of each calendar month. Please look at your UCAS TRACK for the decision. UCAS will normally email you to inform you that a decision has been made. If you’re made an offer, you’ll receive an email from the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education with an offer letter and some occupational health forms. You’ll subsequently receive a number of documents such as ‘What Next’ which tells you about your offer and what you need to do next, from Kingston University’s Applicant Services Unit. If you decide to accept the offer, it is important that you complete the occupational health questionnaire and ask your doctor to complete the GP questionnaire as soon as possible and return these to the Faculty. You only need to do this once you’ve decided to accept the offer FIRMLY. If you’re undecided, you need to do no more until you’ve made a firm decision.
