Preparation of supervisors of midwives

This module is for nominated practicing midwives who are eligible to undertake the Preparation of Supervisors of Midwives programme (NMC, 2012). You will have met NMC (2012) requirements and have confirmation of nomination from the Local Supervising Authority Midwifery Officer (LSAMO) to undertake the course.

As stipulated by the NMC (2014) Standard 5 requirement of a minimum 90hrs each for theory and practice, you will need to obtain support and agreement from your sponsoring employer for the protected time.

Explore key issues in the statutory supervision of midwives. On successful completion of the module you will be able to support and develop midwives and the maternity care services and ensure the protection of the public. The Local Supervising Authority Midwifery Officer (LSAMO) will be informed for appointment purposes and the NMC will also be informed as this course is now a recordable qualification.

Learning outcomes:  

  • Critically appraises the role and responsibility of the Supervisor of Midwives.
  • Analyses relevant legislative/ethical frameworks for the supervision of midwives.
  • Critical evaluate leadership in supervision of midwives
  • Critically analyses the issues involved in investigatory supervision together with clear application of legislative frameworks.
  • Evaluates research and evidence to support conclusions and recommendations in support of childbirth as a normal physiological even.
  • Evaluates self, reflecting on communication skills in responding to conflicts and dilemma that women and midwives experience.
  • Critically examines, selects and manages information from local and national policy agendas to direct maternity service provision.
