Professional practice in mammography 2

This is a core module in the MSc in Medical Imaging (Mammography) and runs concurrently with Professional practice in mammography 2.
As both module need to be undertaken the contract price below is for both modules.
This module further develops the knowledge and skills obtained from Professional Practice in Mammography 1 module and introduces additional mammographic assessment technique and associated breast pathologies. The module will also develop the student?s role as a mentor enabling educational support to junior colleagues.

Core factual material is provided via the keynote lectures during attendance of the identified academic week.


Learning outcomes:  

  • Competently and safely perform additional and advanced mammographic examinations undertaken for clients with a range of different physical, medical and other special-needs, to the standard necessary to optimise diagnostic accuracy.
  • Critically evaluate additional advanced mammographic technique and diagnostic quality of images and make recommendations to improve practice.
  • Make informed critical judgements with regard to the operation of the x-ray imaging equipment used within assessment clinics.
  • Recognise and evaluate common breast pathology and the potential need for further assessment.
  • Appraise the knowledge, understanding and communication and interpersonal skills demonstrated by different professionals delivering the service and where appropriate, compare and contrast these with their own ability to communicate effectively in the workplace with women and professional colleagues.
  • Provide and appraise your ongoing relationship with your workplace mentor (clinical supervisor). Integrate what you have learnt from this relationship and evaluate how you are able to use these skills with an identified episode where you are required to mentor or supervise a colleague.

Who is the module for:  

Radiographers (Diagnostic and Therapeutic)with a degree/diploma or equivalent in Radiography, with access to clinical practice in Mammography.

Entry criteria:  

Registration as a Radiographer with the HCPC and a degree/diploma in Radiography (Diagnostic or Therapeutic).Students must have access to mammography clinical practice as there is a large clinical component to this modules.

Number of credits and level of study:   30 credits at level 7.

Assessment:   Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), Logbook/assessment of clinical competence and reflective essay

Location:   The Rose Centre, St George's Hospital, Cranmer Terrace, SW17 0RE

Pattern of Delivery:   Course length: 2 and 1/2 teaching days (as part of co-requisite module) over 1 week plus self-directed study
