Return to nursing programme (RTP)

If you've ever thought about returning to nursing, now is the time to do it. This fresh approach to return to practice supports nurses on their journey back into a nursing career.

The joint Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education has many years' experience of delivering this course. We are now entering a new and exciting phase where we are also offering specific support for those wishing to return to general practice nursing. We have established relationships with practice partners across acute, community and general practice settings and have excellent feedback from our students

Supportive tutors and mentors will lead your learning experience and refresh your nursing skills, enabling you to re-enter the nursing profession as a confident and competent practitioner. With no course fees, and additional financial support available, there's never been a better time to return to nursing.

What you can expect
-A bursary of £650 will be paid to you at the beginning of the course.
-The clinical practice is arranged for you from a selection of acute NHS Trusts and some primary care settings. For those returning to general practice nursing, placements will be arranged in appropriate GP settings.
-Theory and skills based sessions; a diverse range of clinical learning in the practice environment.
-'Sign-off' Mentors and Practice Educators in the practice environment are nominated to support the assessment of your practice outcomes.
-The practice partners working with the University to take Return to Nursing students are keen to employ you and Preceptorship support is provided in the early re-registration period.

This module responds to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for all nurses whose UK registration has lapsed and are required to undertake a formal programme leading to the renewal of registration and re-entry to registered practice.

The aim of the module is to enable you to re-enter practice with up-to-date knowledge and skills and to deliver care/interventions with confidence and competence.


Learning outcomes:  

  • Critically challenge and evaluate the effectiveness of care delivery models in providing person centred, clinically effective compassionate care.
  • Critically appraise the impact of health and social care policy on the provision of services for all client groups.
  • Demonstrate critical awareness of ethical issues contained within contemporary professional practice and reflect on and analyse the impact of own culture and that of others on the way care is provided.
  • Critically appraise the principles and policies underpinning the nurse`s role in promoting and supporting healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Demonstrate clinical effectiveness in working with the multi -disciplinary team in meeting complex needs and maintaining patient/client safety.
  • Use evidence-based practice to support clinical decision making
  • Critically evaluate own communication skills, ensuring they are effective, safe, non-discriminatory and promote effective partnership working.

Who is the module for:  

Nurses who have previously been on the NMC (previously UKCC) register and wish to re-join after a break, will need to meet current requirements and apply for readmission via NMC Online.

Entry criteria:  

Applications are invited to all nurses whose UK registration has lapsed, regardless of how long you have been out of practice. Assessment of the application will follow with an invitation to selection and interview days as appropriate.

Programme for the interview day: The interview and selection day begins at 9.00am with a welcome and introductions. In the morning we'll review the documents we've asked you to bring (see below for details) and you'll complete a numeracy test and a literacy test. If you pass all of the morning's tests, your interview will take place in the afternoon.

Kingston University and St George's University of London implemented an interview process called 'multiple-mini interviews' (MMIs). The MMI approach is a robust and efficient assessment method that is less subjective than a panel interview, ensuring that candidates are treated fairly. More detailed information will be sent to you when you are invited to attend.

In preparation for the interview, we recommend you:
-Visit the BBC bitesize website where you can update your maths and numeracy and English and literacy skills.
-Think clearly about why you want to come back to nursing and that you are aware of some the changes in nursing since you left. To do this, it's a good idea to look at websites such as the Department of Health (DOH), Social Care Institute of Excellence (SCIE), Royal College of Nursing (RCN), Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) and other sites as appropriate such as the return to practice website - www.hee.nhs.uk
-Be aware of issues related to the health service that are reported in the media.

Prior to interview please ensure you can provide evidence that you have been a registered nurse with the NMC prior to that the GNC or UKCC. Go to the NMC web page and activate your account to be registered online with the regulator. When you attend for the interview we expect to see the statement of entry from the regulator or a print out of your previous registration.

Number of credits and level of study:   30 credits at level 6. The course is also offered as a undergraduate (level 5) award.

Assessment:   -Assignment/care study
-Completion of practice assessment document
-Minimum of 150 hours supervised practice

Pattern of Delivery:   -January course runs over 14 study days from 9:30-14:00
-September course runs over 10 study days from 9:30-16:30
