Practice education and mentorship

This module is of value to practitioners who educate and mentor learners within the clinical setting. The module focuses on developing appropriate knowledge and skills in order to effectively facilitate the development of others.

Throughout the module students draw upon their clinical experiences and relate these to theoretical frameworks. The module places emphasis on the development of self, through personal development planning.

Throughout the module participants engage with a wide range of learning activities which augment learning and act as a foundation for reflection.

Learning outcomes:  

  • Critically debate practice education and mentorship in the context of clinical governance, professional and regulatory frameworks.
  • Critically discuss influencing factors and the fundamental principles of practice education and mentorship that underpin effective education and development of competence.
  • Critically appraise current theories of learning, teaching and assessment and judiciously apply these in the clinical setting to successfully support learners with a diverse range of learning needs.
  • Critically evaluate personal capacity to cultivate appropriate relationships, facilitate and promote active learning within the clinical setting.
  • Critically reflect on development through experience; justifying practice and identifying future learning needs, subsequently developing strategies to support continuing professional development as a practice educator or mentor.

Who is the module for:  

All registered healthcare professionals with a degree/diploma in a healthcare profession who educate and mentor learners within the practice setting. It is advisable to have at least two years' full-time clinical experience .

Entry criteria:  

Registration as a healthcare professional with a degree/diploma in a healthcare profession with at least two years full-time clinical experience.

Number of credits and level of study:   30 credits at level 7.

Assessment:   Reflective report, Essay

Location:   Kingston University

Pattern of Delivery:   Course length: 5 teaching days over 1 week plus self-directed study.
Includes pre-course activities.
