Enabling Self-management and Coping with Arthritic pain using Exercise, ESCAPE-pain.

Mike Hurley

ESCAPE-pain is a rehabilitation programme for chronic joint pain that delivers the recommended interventions and has wide health benefits.

It was devised and evaluated by Professor Mike Hurley, who explains, “Chronic knee and hip pain is a major health problem. Clinical guidelines recommend information, advice and exercise to reduce pain and disability. However, few people receive these interventions or on-going support. Currently the programme is delivered in NHS facilities, but this limits our ability to reach the large number of people who could benefit from the programme. This project assesses the feasibility of delivering ESCAPE-in to the community. Showing that it works would enable many more people to benefit. This would help us to help us in coping with this already large and growing problem.”
