Exploring how student midwives develop the skills needed to support childbirth

Midwifery students

Little is known about the thoughts, feelings and experiences of student midwives as they develop the essential skills required to support women in childbirth. Few studies have investigated the extent to which their student experience equips them as newly qualified practising midwives to fulfil their role as an autonomous practitioner in this area.

Julie Harrison, Dr Jayne Marshall and Dr Jayne Price are interviewing third year students and newly qualified midwives to redress the lack of research in this area. The results of the study will be used to inform midwifery course development and will be disseminated in relevant journals and conference presentations.
