Investigating service users’ adherence to medication

Mental health students training

Interviews with mental health service users – and their caregivers – about their attitudes to medication have highlighted their difficulties with receiving effective care. Our team, comprising Professor Mary Chambers and Dr Iris Gault, together with Professor Ann Gallagher from the University of Surrey, interviewed a group of mental health service users with histories of giving up medication and repeated compulsory admission. The researchers recorded the participants’ struggle with negotiating treatment and concluded that the service users believe that the behaviour of professionals was crucial in collaborative decision-making about medication.
